Training for Successful Functional Test Automation

With the growth in digital technologies, there continues to be a strong need for test automation and functional testing in the Columbus market. Companies and clients of CareWorks Tech are looking to put together programs and frameworks of automating test quality assurance processes. To meet a high demand area in the market for test automation engineering, CareWorks Tech established a two-year apprenticeship program to develop engineers to provide solutions.

The CareWorks Tech Test Engineer Specialist Training (TEST) program creates specialists in test automation.  The program exposes participants to real clients’ business challenges. Typical candidates have a technology degree and a baseline of technical knowledge of programming.  The TEST program has developed over the past five years to enable software engineers who are early in their career to add this specialty of test automation engineering into their skill set.

Once accepted into this rigorous program, apprentices begin in an intense three-week program of structured class time. They then transition to a five-week program that involves hands-on experience working with experienced test automation teams. For the remainder of the apprenticeship, they are assigned a CareWorks Tech client with responsibilities, deliverables, and outcomes based on the skills they have learned and work they are producing.

Participants work on production assets. Training goes beyond an automation framework, with a focus on building mature test suites, managing data fixtures, optimizing performance, ensuring maintainability and leveraging supporting technology, including continuous integration. Specialists are verified against multiple competencies:

  • Technical knowledge of test automation
  • Quality and maintainability of solutions
  • Understanding and application of test strategy


One of the things that sets the TEST program apart from many other apprenticeship opportunities is that it is a paid program with no out-of-pocket expenses for the candidates.


Graduates are capable of leading test automation efforts and of the following evolving technical quality assurance:

  • Understand emerging test engineering practices and tools
  • Can develop a sustainable test strategy
  • Multilingual and able to navigate test and implementation code
  • Can build an automated test suite from the ground up

Following graduation, there is an ongoing mentorship. To date, 18 candidates have successfully completed the program and they have had 100% placement rates with various clients for continued employment as a qualified engineer.
